Weekends & Wayf

Weekends & Wayf

A little birthday recap. My birthday was on Monday, January 7. Since it was on a Monday, I went out with Haley, one of my closest friends on Sunday. I wanted to buy myself a big gift this year. I was a tough one. I also figured I would buy something expensive now because you never know when you won’t have money coming in. So, I met her at Chanel. She’s a really good person to go shopping with because she knows my wardrobe, tells me her honest opinion, and she’s always right.

The flat straw pair shown was in another ( and in my opinion , a much better) colorway. It had black patent leather accents - toe cap, logo and trim. Haley was right, they weren’t sexy on the foot, they were too casual, the logo was too in your face, and it wasn’t a good shoe for most of the year. Also, If I was spending a large amount of money (for me), I shouldn’t spend it on straw. I went with the gold mule that had the logo discreetly in gold as well. They are very me (classic with a twist), they go with everything, and they were one of the least expensive pairs but a bit more than the straw version.

We had time to kill before dinner, so we moved on to Sephora where I picked up the eye tint pictured below. Haley has amazing brows, so I wanted to try what she used. I tried Glossier Bow Brow and it was meh, and a drug store brand. Both kept my brows in place but didn’t fill them in enough. This one fills my brows in a lot better than the others. To completely fill them in (which I rarely do), I would also need a pencil but this did a much better job than anything else I tried.

I always wear red lipstick , so I’m always trying new ones. I had heard a lot about Pat McGrath’s Matte Trance Matte Lipstick. I read that if you love red lips, you needed to try the color “Obsessed.” I bought a mini as part of a kit to test it. I will be buying the full size. It’s a bright orange red like one of my other favorites Nars Heat Wave, which happens to be a favorite of Jenna Lyons (for all you Jenna fans).

We ended the night with dinner. I’ve been wanting to go to Ralph Lauren’s The Polo Bar for ages but you can never get a reservation. I had been trying for weeks via open table with no luck. On the Saturday before my birthday, I decided to call the restaurant directly. No luck at the restaurant, but the hostess mentioned eating at the bar with a limited menu. I quickly texted Haley, and she was as expected game, so it was a done deal. The place was gorgeous and I expected nothing less. Lots of plaid pillows, glossy maple colored wood, white and bottle green accents including the bathroom tile, polo hats and mallets as props. They had what looked like handmade potato chips, nuts and panko covered olives ( per Haley, they were addictive. I don’t like olives) at the bar while you wait for your food and people watch. For dinner, I had a shrimp cocktail tied in a seaweed bow to hold them together (a nice touch), a salad and champagne, and Haley had a burger and wine. It was a good day.

This weekend my friend Wendy wanted to go see the Goop Lab and lunch, so we went to Bond Street downtown. It’s a beautiful, impeccably curated, and very expensive store, so we obviously left empty handed. They had a bit of everything - cook books, jewelry, hair and skin care and clothes. The only thing that surprised me was the staff. They were too loud and too young for the type of product they sell, if that makes sense.

Then we went to lunch at Gemma, which is an Italian restaurant in The Bowery Hotel. I highly recommend it for the food and people watching.

I had wanted the blouse below for a while. It was sold out for so long that I forgot about it until a blogger did a Instagram story mentioning it had come in stock. I ordered a small. It runs a bit big but not so large that I would return it. It comes with a built in nude cami, gold buttons on the cuffs, and it ties at the neck in the back. It’s really gorgeous and better quality than I expected. It looks equality great with jeans as it does with a work pants or a skirt. I prefer it with something more casual. You’ll see it on my Instagram shortly.

Another recommendation this week is the Nespresso Pixie that my parent’s got me for my birthday. If you don’t have a lot of counter space, this machine is for you. It’s tiny, extremely user friendly, and makes amazing coffee. I have yet to try the milk frother that came in the bundle, but the machine automatically tops each cup off with a thin layer of foam anyway. I’m lucky enough to live close to Nespresso boutique, so I went in to buy pods and learned more about the machine and the company. . If you don’t live near a Nespresso store, they have excellent 24 hr. customer service if you have any questions, you want to order pods, or if something breaks. If you have issues with your machine, they will send you a loaner while they fix it. They also make it very easy to recycle the pods, which I really appreciate. They will send you free pre-labeled UPS bags to send your used pods back to the company when you place your pod order or you can go into a store and pick up the bags. I like a thoughtful company.
